Grade 1-2 Spilt and Pollinators

Today was my first day speaking to little children in the classroom about pollinators and it was fantastic. Sometimes I don’t realize how much a little brain can sponge up in 45 minutes, but these little ones were eager to remind me!

There were 60 kids in total, coming in to the library in groups of 20, each with bees on their mind. I began with the concept of pollen, what pollen is, how flowers use it to produce seeds, and that pollen is an important source of protein for POLLINATORS. We went though various pictures of pollinators and talked about what made each one special and compared: all of them were hairy. We talked about bumblebees, leaf cutter bees, and honeybees and everyone got to wear the beekeepers hat!

When we talked about why bees were important for the environment, they all agreed that pollination, food for birds and making food for people were important. But, when I asked what we could do to protect the little bugs, there were various answers: try not to stomp on them, do the bee dance to tell them where the food is, pick them up and carry them to a safe nesting spot, give them candy, OH, and remember not to use pesticides because when bees fly flower to flower they will get a lot of chemical on them and it will kill them! Now thats a nobel winner there!

These children are creative and excited about the natural world around them. They were eager to understand the differences between bees and wasps, but more importantly, completely grasped the importance of biodiversity within the city.

I really enjoyed doing the class visit, I hope that I will be able to do more in the near future. Working with children is my passion, but furthering the diversity of educational programming A.B.C can offer is my ambition!
