It is that time of year yet again, and as always, I would like to encourage all of you who are interested in keeping bees to attending the ever-excellent Alberta Beekeepers Association Integrated Pest Management Conference. Medhat Nasr (our Provincial apiculturalist) has an amazing ability to get some really interesting speakers to come and talk about bees and the diseases that they face! Even though this conference is focused on commercial beekeeping practices, come on out and remember knowledge is power!

Integrated Pest Management Systems
February 5 – 6, 2013 at the Executive Royal Inn
The 2013 IPM workshop will focus on Varroa, Nosema and viruses interactions. It will also discuss impacts of colony movements, pollination and bee health. The question about breeding resistant bees and effectiveness as Varroa mite control measures will be debated. Neonocetoids and pesticides safety on bees will also be discussed.
Dr. Jeff Harris, Professor at Mississippi State University who is a specialist on bee breeding and functionality of Varroa-resistant honey bees.
Mr. Scott Meers, Insect Management Specialist, Pest Surveillance Branch, Alberta Agriculture;
Dr. Connie Heart, Senior Science Advisor, Manager, Pest Management Regulatory Agency, Saskatchewan Tech Transfer Team.
Dr. Ralph Büchler head of the Bee Institute, Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen, Kirchhain, Germany, is a bee breeder of the Carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica Pollmann) in Germany. He is also leading one of the successful breeding programs for Varroa resistance. The recent advances of bee health and viruses will be emphasized.
Arun Pillou Food Scientist Specialist and Amin Jivraj P. Eng. MBA President of Enhanced Capital Recovery which is an SR&ED Consulting firm. Enhanced Capital Recovery’s business is maximizing government incentives in the areas of Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax credits. They will be providing information on what this federal tax incentive program is about, what types of projects can be eligible and how to track the work you do, so that you may qualify.
Ms. Shirzad Chunara, Development Officer, Crop Business Development Branch, ARD will be speaking about some of the upcoming Growing Forward programs which may be relevant to the beekeepers.
