Celebrating Alberta’s Urban and Rural Harvest 2013

Harvest5Nothing brings Calgarians together quite like food and festivals, and cool weather certainly isn’t going to slow us down. This Fall is a veritable cornucopia of harvest festivals and events – from farmer’s markets to communal dinners to corn mazes and pumpkin patches – with communities and organizations all over the city celebrating the bountiful Alberta Harvest. Apiaries and Bees for Communities is proud to be showcasing our role in urban agriculture by participating in a number of these great food-forward events.

This Sunday, September 15th, Slow Food Calgary will be hosting their 12th Annual Feast of Fields celebration at Rouge restaurant in Inglewood. To highlight this year’s focus on urban agriculture, A.B.C will bringing some special guests to; the Bees4Communites honeybees! Tucked away in a quiet corner of the garden, A.B.C will guide interested guests on a tour of our partner’s hives, allowing them to get up close and personal with the fascinating producers of our urban honey harvest and, of course, sample some of this tasty treat. Talk about getting a ‘taste’ of urban beekeeping!

On September 22nd, REAP Calgary’s 4th Annual Food for Thought will be taking place at the Chinese Cultural Centre. This harvest celebration brings together all of the participants in a sustainable local food system for sampling, live music, learning and conversation. A.B.C will be participating in this event with our Bees4Communities partner, Ox and Angela, who will be serving melon gazpacho with honey from A.B.C’s urban bee yards.

A.B.C is also looking forward to taking part in a couple of community harvest festivities; the Wildwood Community Garden Celebration on September 28th and Bowness Eats – A Community Food Celebration on October 5th; with a pop-up market, harvest fair and pig roast.

There is something for everyone out there, so grab your friends and family and head out to some of these great events; meet your farmers, neighbours and backyard beekeepers while sampling the best of Alberta’s harvest!
